Timber
Segment
Highland Forest Resources, Inc.
and the Northeast Division of Seneca Resources
Corporation carry out the Timber segment for the
company. This segment markets veneer logs, export
logs, sawlogs and green and kiln dry lumber from
its timber holdings of more than 100,000 acres
and nearly 400 million board feet in Pennsylvania
and New York. Our timber is located in the heart
of the world’s best source of black cherry
hardwood. The black cherry from this region is
desired because of its attractive wood color,
grain pattern and lack of defects and blemishes.
Veneer buyers consider the black cherry from this
area the finest quality in the country.
Timber
is processed at two sawmills in northwestern Pennsylvania,
owned and operated by Highland, and sold throughout
North America, Europe and Asia. Modern automated
technology is employed to achieve the highest
level of efficiency.
This line of business is unique
for National Fuel in that, as a living asset,
it grows at an average rate of 3.5% per year and
each tree adds about two inches of diameter every
10 years. With prudent stewardship under the management
of our staff and professional foresters, we can
harvest an annual return while maintaining and
even enhancing the asset base.
