Compressor Station

Fast Facts
About the compressor station

Fast Facts

  • The Empire Connector Project is a $177 million investment in New York State, designed to meet the region’s growing energy needs.
  • Running from near Rochester to near Corning, the proposed Empire Connector Project, an underground natural gas pipeline, will link the existing Buffalo-to-Syracuse Empire State Pipeline to the proposed Millennium pipeline project.
  • Empire Pipeline’s parent company, Natural Fuel Gas Company, is headquartered in Williamsville, NY, outside Buffalo, and has more than 100 years of experience in safely supplying and transporting natural gas to residential and business customers.
  • A proposed compressor station, located on the existing Empire State Pipeline in Oakfield, will increase the capacity of the existing pipeline.
  • Using the latest technology, the compressor station’s three-building design will include low-emission gas turbines and an emergency shutdown system. It is designed to reduce noise transmission.
  • The compressor station will generate more than $1 million in new property tax revenue each year to benefit schools and localities in Genesee County.

About the compressor station

As part of the Empire Connector, a new compressor station will be built along the existing Empire State Pipeline on Lockport Road in Oakfield. It will allow a larger gas supply to travel greater distances along the pipeline route. The compressor station acts a pump, pushing the gas through the pipeline.

Using state-of-the-art technology and design, the compressor station will be built to ensure safety while minimizing impact on its location. Among its features:
  • Design:The compressor station will include three structures: a main compressor building, a control and auxiliary facility, and a gas meter building.
  • Power: Two natural gas-fired turbines will power the compressor station. Equipped with the lowest-emission technology, the station will produce emissions similar in make-up to that emitted by the average residential gas furnace, and will be tested regularly. Further, there will be no visible indication of emissions from the station.
  • Safety: The compressor station will include a state-of-the-art emergency shutdown system, designed to quickly detect and isolate any irregularities before the station’s safety is compromised.
  • Impact: Designed to reduce noise transmission, the compressor station will meet or exceed FERC standards. Further, the proposed location for the compression station has been selected to minimize the visibility from residents on Lockport Rd and the two cross roads. Building style and color will further be designed to blend in with the surrounding rural setting. Following construction, regular vehicle access to the site will be no more than a typical residence, with only occasional deliveries of materials.
  • Security: State of the art security measures will be installed and employed at the Oakfield Station.

Economic benefits

As part of a $177 million investment in upstate New York, the Empire Connector Project will have a positive economic impact on the communities where it is located, generating 500 construction jobs and infusing local communities with new tax revenue. Local communities will also benefit from increased spending throughout the construction period.
